CIBSE Ireland crowns Daly ‘King of the Sandwich-makers’

A triumphant Fergus Daly shows just how much the coveted CIBSE Annual Lunch “King of the Sandwich-makers” title means to him.

Always competitive, Fergus Daly undertook the sandwich-making contest at the recent CIBSE Annual Lunch in Croke Park with his usual enthusiasm and left Eamon McGrattan trailing far behind in his wake. “Who cares if the trophy was an imitation Gold Sandwich made of two slices of stale bread sprayed with cheap gold paint and stuck to a paper plate“, said Fergus, “it’s all about the winning. I’ve won many trophies for a variety of sporting endeavours over the years but, to capture this coveted title in the holy ground of Croke Park is something I will cherish to my dying day.

”To be fair, Eamon was a worthy opponent but my sandwiching-making technique, honed over years and years of dedicated practice, is unique. I think the stack of beautifully-presented sandwiches you see before me on the competition podium speaks for itself.

”That said, I must acknowledge the contribution of my colleagues, and our guests, at the Mitsubishi Electric table. Their encouragement and support was phenomenal. Don Hoban was particularly supportive, especially when Pat Lehane unsportingly threw me a curve ball just minutes before I was called to compete. I’ve told the organisers I’ll not defend my title next year unless Lehane if barred from the competition area.

“But to finish on a high note … here’s to sandwich-makers everywhere”.

It also gives us another edge over our competition … imagine how good U2 would be with two Edges”.

Lambay Island could soon become an exclusive hideaway for wealthy holidaymakers after plans to modernise it were recently given the green light.

Earlier this year Fingal County Council gave the Lambay Estate Company, the trust company through which the famous Baring banking family still owns and runs the island, permission to upgrade and modernise the buildings, especially the plumbing.

Thanks to Eamon McGrattan of McGrattan & Kenny – who also owns a charter boat business called Fish & Trips out of Malahide – a select group of building services industry personnel recently enjoyed a private tour of the island.

As Eamon’s guests, the group got a private tour of the Castle, another building called the White House, and some of the surrounding gardens. Guides for the day were direct descendants of the Baring family bank founders.

FISH & TRIPS

Hence Eamon McGrattan has turned to the high seas. He has always loved messing about on boats and developed an interest in fishing so he could get out on the water. Not surprisingly, he inherited some of this from his late father, Eamon Snr, who was a very keen boating enthusiast.

However, keeping a boat of any significant size these days can be expensive and so Eamon decided to turn his hobby into a business, thereby giving him the best of both worlds. He devised the business plan as part of his MBA studies in DCU and so had fully researched the concept before starting out last year. He even went so far as to sell his existing boat and get a new one designed and built to meet the needs of the business.

Eamon has also completed all the necessary navigation, sea safety, and health and safety-related courses, and is fully licenced to offer charters for groups of up to 12 people at a time. Rods, reels, feathers etc are also provided. There is even a BBQ that can be fired up to cook freshly-caught fish.

While Malahide Charter Boat is the formal company name that operates the business, Fish & Trips – the name emblazoned across the side of the 36ft by 12ft boat – aptly captures the essence of the service provided. Fish & Trips provides three different packages:

• Sightseeing and marine wildlife tours around Lambay Island;

• Mackeral fishing trips to one of the islands off Dublin;

• Sea angling for the more experienced/serious angler.

A mixture of all three, or a combination of any two, can also be provided.
